That idea emerged while working on a research project focused on sustainable AI use. The original question was practical: could small changes in how people interact with AI reduce unnecessary computation without reducing the usefulness of the outcome?

The work suggested that sustainability was only part of a larger picture.

Before an AI system produces an answer, a person has already made several choices: what to ask, how much context to provide, whether to accept the response, what to verify, and whether another interaction is necessary.

Those choices influence far more than energy use. They shape learning, trust, productivity, accountability, and the quality of decisions themselves.

That led to a broader question:

How can we help people make better decisions with AI?

SAGE was created to explore that question through research, practical frameworks, and public learning.

Because the future of AI will not be shaped only by what machines can do. It will also be shaped by the decisions we make when we use them.
